El Hierro – this tiny piece of land, part of the Canary Islands archipelago, is located further west than all the others, which is why it’s also called the «Meridian Island.» About 10,000 people live on its 278 km², with nearly 60% living in the town of Valverde, the unique capital of El Hierro.

Climate of El Hierro
The climate on the island is very comfortable. It’s due to the combination of trade winds and ocean currents. Typically, the air temperature here ranges from 20 to 25 °C, while the water temperature is from 19 to 23 °C. All this provides a cool breeze in the summer and the absence of scorching heat.

Natural Features of the Island
The formation of the island occurred as a result of a series of strong eruptions. All this contributed to its unique terrain – in such a small area there are dense forests (laurel and pine trees), plateaus, and rich fields with vineyards. The flora of the island is of great interest to tourists because many of the local plants grow only here, and some – only on the islands of the archipelago. This also applies to representatives of the animal world, with reptiles being most common here.
El Hierro Beaches
The shores of the island, stretching over 100 km, feature many steep cliffs, some reaching heights of 1 km. Among the cliffs are numerous lagoons and small beaches – all of which are a true gift for diving enthusiasts. However, there is a choice – sandy and pebbly, noisy and secluded, red and black beaches… All of these are at the disposal of vacationers.
Among them, several of the most well-known are Muellito de Orchilla, located next to the Orchilla Lighthouse, the longest on the island El Verodal, the rocky Charco de los Sargos and Punta Grande, the red sand-covered Timijiraque, the black El Tamaduste, the golden La Restinga, the rocky Tacorón, and many others.
Cities and Resorts of the Island
The largest city is Valverde, but it has only a few thousand inhabitants. As for other settlements, they are small villages where vacationers live. Notable among them are Mocanal, located near the base of the cliffs, Las Montañetas – an ancient settlement steeped in history, and also Isora – a quiet village.
Attractions of El Hierro
Travelers come to the island not for these but for the peace, crystal-clear water, beaches, and other attributes of a tranquil vacation. A large portion of the island’s attractions are natural areas and reserves protected by UNESCO. These include the Restinga Reserve, where unique invertebrates and fish are found, the Roques de Salmor Reserve, where birds nest, and others. One of the island’s wonders is trees that appear to be pressed to the ground by an unknown force. Visitors can climb Pico Malpaso (1,500 m), observe the traditions of the island’s inhabitants, and visit Cape Orchilla, from which the westernmost lighthouse of the country can be seen.

How to Get to El Hierro?
The best option is a flight from Spain (Seville, Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, etc.) to the El Hierro airport called Aeropuerto de los Cangrejos (VDE), from where you can drive around the island by car.
