In our Spanish Products series, did you know that bananas are grown in the Canary Islands? Around 400,000 tons of bananas are harvested annually, making up a third of all agriculture on the islands. Half of all Canary bananas are grown on Tenerife, mainly around Puerto de la Cruz.
But let’s talk about these little gems. Authentic Canary platano bananas are about half the size of regular bananas, and they are incredibly fragrant and delicious. They make for a great snack during hikes, and they also contain fewer carbs than African bananas. We take them on our treks and add them to our breakfast muesli.
Unfortunately, prices for Canary fruits are about twice as high as regular ones. Canary platano bananas cost around €2.
