Which hiking routes on Tenerife require a permit

Starting from November 2024, there are 8 routes on Tenerife that require you to obtain prior permission. In this article, I will explain how to do this and whether it's worth it.

Permit for the Masca Gorge Route

Masca Gorge
Masca Gorge

Masca Gorge is a unique place on Tenerife with incredible beauty and rare forms of life. Visiting the gorge is now strictly regulated: only allowed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The path includes descent and ascent, one-way route is not available as the pier is closed.

Important: hiking boots are mandatory. Without them, you may be denied access. If needed, you can buy them at a high price right in the village shop.

The number of visitors is strictly limited: in summer (March to October) 25 people are allowed every 30 minutes from 8:30 to 11:00; in the rest of the year — 30 people every 30 minutes from 8:30 to 10:30. The return journey from the beach must start no later than 14:00.

Parking in Masca village is limited to two hours, so it’s recommended to use public transport or a taxi. Before starting the route, you need to pass through control at the tourist center.

Children under 8 are not allowed, minors (under 18) must be accompanied by an adult. If the accompanying person is not the legal guardian, written permission is required.

For now, tickets are free. The ticket is individual and non-transferable. You must present ID to access the trail.

You can get a permit on the website caminobarrancodemasca.com.

The ticket includes: assigned access time, information about the area and safety measures, staff assistance and accident insurance. Not included: transfer and personal equipment (except helmet).

Sendero de El Pijaral Route (Sendero del Bosque Encantado de Anaga)

In the very heart of Tenerife island, amidst the magic of Anaga Rural Park, lies one of the most enchanting places — El Pijaral trail (El Pijaral), also known as the Enchanted Forest trail (Bosque Encantado). This trail, about 6.7 kilometers long, is of medium difficulty and very photogenic. The journey begins at La Ensillada parking lot, passing through Mirador Cabezo del Tejo with views of the village of Taganana and the northern coast of Anaga.

El Pijaral is not just a trail, but a journey into the past, into the laurel forests of the Tertiary period, which once covered much of the Mediterranean. Here you can encounter Pijara, a relict fern reaching three meters in length. Walking along this trail feels like immersing yourself in a fairy tale.

To preserve the uniqueness and fragility of this place, access to the trail is limited to 45 people per day. Permission is issued 90 days before the visit. Sometimes rangers check the reservation, for this simply show it on your phone screen. The fine for lack of permission is €600.

Barranco del Infierno (Hell’s Gorge)

The 6.5 km route starts in the town of Adeje. Access is limited to 300 visitors per day. Advance ticket booking is required on the official website.

Routes in the Teide area

From November 2024, visiting the following routes in the Teide area requires mandatory booking through the Tenerife ON platform:

  • PNT 07 – Montaña Blanca – La Rambleta
  • PNT 09 – Teide – Pico Viejo – Mirador de las Narices del Teide
  • PNT 23 – Los Regatones Negros
  • PNT 28 – Chafarí

The park constantly monitors access to the routes. If you don’t have a permit, you may be fined and denied access to the trail. I recommend planning your visit in advance and obtaining all necessary permits.

If you couldn’t get a permit, you’ll have to make do with just the viewing platforms.

When visiting routes in the Teide area, mandatory equipment is required:

  • long pants (worn or in backpack)
  • fleece jacket
  • special mountain footwear
  • water or hydrating fluids
  • mobile phone with charged battery
  • flashlight or headlamp with batteries (especially if the route is taken in the evening, at night, or early morning)
  • in winter: gloves and hat

Sendero Telesforo Bravo (route №10) to the summit of Teide

To access the Teide peak via the Telesforo Bravo trail (trail №10), connecting La Rambleta (3,555 m) with the Teide summit (3,715 m), you still need to obtain a permit through the Reservas Parques Nacionales website. The permit is required regardless of whether you reached La Rambleta on foot or by cable car. You must have the original or a certified copy of your ID document with you.

PNT 07 Montaña Blanca — La Rambleta

The route starts from Montaña Blanca and climbs to the upper cable car station. It requires a permit through the Tenerife ON system. The route has a steep incline (up to 60% in some sections) and is considered very tiring due to the high altitude.

Tenerife ON Booking System

Since 2024, Tenerife has implemented a unified booking platform called Tenerife ON, through which you can obtain permits for many routes on the island. For routes in the Anaga area, booking opens every Monday at 07:00 for the week ahead. Reservations are available for a period of up to 14 days from the moment spots are published.
