Its history is fascinating. Built in the 1960s, the dam was supposed to harness the water from eleven streams that flow into the gorge. But it never got off the ground due to filtration problems. Attempts to repair it have been futile — the volcanic rock is too porous.
Today, El Río is a haven for lovers of abandoned places and breathtaking canyons. Local authorities and farmers debate its potential to solve water shortages in the south of the island. However, the Canary Islands’ Minister of Agriculture firmly refuses to invest in this futile project.
Today, the El Río dam is a reminder of past failures and the importance of careful planning in large projects. But for me, it’s also a place with a unique aura, where time seems to stand still.
I suggest parking here.
