Did you come to Tenerife with a child? Have you had enough sunbathing and swimming, conquered the volcano, and watched whales and dolphins? Were you amazed by the dragon tree and tried the local bananas? Now your soul craves new bright impressions! Head to Jungle Park. No matter how old you are — the park will pleasantly surprise everyone!
Jungle Park is a themed amusement park. It’s located about 3 km from the Los Cristianos resorts, Las Americas, and Costa Adeje. You can get there by free bus (check the schedule on the park’s website).
About Jungle Park
Jungle Park opened in 1995. A human-made jungle sprawls across an area of 75,000 m². The main idea of the park is animals in a wild nature setting. Jungle Park is also called the Bird Park because it hosts world-class bird of prey shows. Tourists are also entertained by the bald eagle from the US seal, an American symbol.
Now about Jungle Park itself. The main reason we came here is the bird of prey show. It’s an extraordinary beautiful sight that you won’t see anywhere else. Plus, an excellent zoo with shady paths and suspended bridges.
Parking in front of the park costs €4, but…
you can park for free along the road nearby.
At the park gates, there are 2 huge stylized eagle figures.
Next is a souvenir shop and the ticket office.
To make it easier to navigate, they give you a park map at the entrance, showing the bridges and paths, the locations of different animals, rest areas and show stages, and the performance times.
The park area is not too big. But it’s amazing how skillfully and lovingly the barren, rocky territory has been turned into lush «jungles», a tropical oasis, a wonder of landscape design, and a masterpiece of garden art. The park has many different palm trees. Bright bursts of flowers brought from Africa and America are scattered around. And there are countless cacti! There’s a pond with blooming lotuses. Mysterious caves and a waterfall are realistically designed, and the rugged terrain is recreated. And best of all, you feel like you’re practically «alone in the jungle», as there aren’t many visitors.
Exotic Bird Show
We first attended the exotic bird show (starting at 12:00 and 2:30 PM). The host, dressed in colonial style, told us about parrots, toucans, marabou storks, and other flying exotics, walking the birds through the rows. Anyone could pet and feed the birds. Meanwhile, large, colorful exotic birds were flying overhead. The kids were delighted!
The Bird of Prey Show
But the main «highlight» of the park is the bird of prey show (starting at 12:30 PM). That’s where we headed after the parrot show. The spectacle, you can’t call it anything else, unfolded in an amphitheater arena. Throughout the performance, a female host told us about the birds (unfortunately in Spanish).
Behind the audience, trainers were standing and launching large bald eagles, griffon vultures, hawks, falcons, and other birds of prey to each other, like paper airplanes. The predators flew right over the audience’s heads, and you had to involuntarily duck to avoid a collision. It’s very difficult to capture a bird in rapid flight. But still, a few shots turned out well.
Then, large birds with a wide wingspan flew from one tower to another on opposite sides of the arena. The flight of the marabou, like a pterodactyl, was impressive. Then they released white storks into the sky, followed by black cranes (I may be mistaken about the bird names). It was a magnificent spectacle when the entire winged «troupe» circled over the arena.
Some very cute and friendly birds also paraded around the arena and between the rows.
Interestingly, the flight feathers of the predators are not trimmed, and there are no tethers on them – they are completely free and «work» at their own will. Any of the winged performers can fly off the stage and circle over the park, but the birds always return. There are no analogues to this show in the world.
After the show, you can get a closer look at the birds and take photos with them.
Sea lion show
At 1:30 pm, the sea lion show started on another stage. They are such talented performers!
First, the «sea artist» painted a bright, positive picture.
Then, two performers showcased examples of grace and acrobatics to music.
At the end, a massive old sea lion came out for a photo session. It was a lot of fun.
Other animals
Phew! We’ve watched three whole shows! The emotions are overwhelming! We should also get acquainted with the other inhabitants of the park. The animals at Jungle Park live almost in a natural environment, and they’re very comfortable here. The enclosure or habitat for each one is carefully designed: there are thickets and ponds for bathing, small islands, rocky and sandy areas. Real tropical trees brought from Africa and South America grow here. They have thrived in the pleasant climate of Tenerife.
Look, the monkeys are carefully watching the cleaning of their territory.
The orangutan appears to be sleeping, but at the same time, he’s keeping an eye on what’s going on.
Jungle Park is home to a pair of white lions from South Africa, which are on the brink of extinction. The lion is old, no longer frolicking, but mostly lying down. However, about every half hour, he gets up, patrols his territory, and roars. He reminded me of my cat. He’s also getting on in years and occasionally walks around the apartment and yells for no apparent reason.
The park has fun-loving penguins. Their feeding at 12:15 pm is quite a show. But we never made it to them.
Tigers, leopards and jaguars, many monkeys, crocodiles and raccoons, pink flamingos, porcupines, meerkats… live in the man-made jungles.
There are also special «contact» pavilions in the park, where visitors can interact with friendly animals, feed and pet them. For €2 from a special vending machine, you’ll get a can of food and can feed the animals by hand.
In the Lemur Pavilion.
Obstacle Course
For thrill-seekers, there is an obstacle course called «Jungle Raid.» It consists of towers and suspension bridges, rope «vines» and mesh tubes, walls and platforms. Don’t be lazy, be sure to try it. Not everywhere is easy, by the way! But you’ll have a good laugh and take plenty of photos!
Bobsled Run
There is an attraction set up like a bobsled run. At the entrance, you’ll be greeted by such a fluffy creature.
The attraction costs €4.
You put on a helmet, sit on a sled, get pulled up a hill by a cable… and then speed down an 800m metal chute.
There are 2 viewing platforms in the park, which are convenient for taking panoramic photos.
Where to Eat
You can get a snack at 3 places in the park: a snack bar near the main entrance, a pizzeria next to the bobsled run, and the La Palapa restaurant above the exotic bird show area. We ate at the pizzeria and had a pizza with ham for €13.70. It was tasty. While we ate, peacocks strutted around, local cats snuck up looking for bread crumbs, and pigeons begged for scraps.
Jungle Park runs an educational program for naturalist schoolchildren, curated by the education department. The park has its own teachers on staff.
