Terminals

In total, there are four terminals at Barajas: T1, T2, T3, and T4. Terminal 4 consists of two buildings — T4 and T4S.

A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals. It is painted in a light green color, and its electronic board displays the direction. The T4 building and the T4S satellite are connected by an automatically operated underground train that runs without a driver.

Airport Architecture

Madrid Airport opened in 1931. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it was significantly renovated and expanded.

The airport renovation project was carried out by British architect Richard Rogers, with the participation of the Spanish architectural firm “Estudio Lamela.” The most unusual detail of Barajas Airport is its wave-shaped roof. Wide overhangs and additional steel structural elements of the roof protect the building’s walls from overheating in summer. Round openings in the ceilings provide natural lighting. The architect emphasized the original shape of the building. Barajas stands out effectively against the surrounding hills.
