The faculty’s territory is a little off the main campus, but it is easy to walk to. We came with a stroller, but that’s no problem at all—there are wide sidewalks and convenient pathways.
The unusual architecture is immediately striking: A huge concrete building with bold rounded lines, lots of glass, light, and open space.
The project was designed by GPY Arquitectos. Their idea was to organically connect the campus with the city and create a cozy «power spot» for art students.
Interesting facts about the project
- Total area — more than 32,000 m2. Lots of room to move around!
- During construction, mainly concrete and frosted glass were used. The texture of the concrete was deliberately made rough to erase traces of the formwork.
- It was possible to do without massive blank walls and small windows. Light and air are everywhere.
- The highlight of the project is a huge spiral ramp. It leads from the upper floors to the common area.
- The project received prestigious awards, including the international Iconic Awards 2015.
Strolling around the campus, you feel like a modern-day Da Vinci. Creative energy is in the air. We walked through the entire inner courtyard, climbed the stairs, and peeked into the workshops. Bright classrooms beckon you to pick up a brush or tools. Very inspiring atmosphere!
Personally, the campus design reminded me of the works of Oscar Niemeyer — the same scale and futurism. And my wife said she feels like she’s in the Sydney Opera House. Overall, the scale is impressive.
