In the early 20th century, Fuerteventura needed its own runway for the Spanish Postal Airlines (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas). For this, a plot of land was chosen between the road to the village of Tetir and the seashore.

In 1940, a military airfield was built near the town of Tefía. After the war, it was used for commercial transport. Due to its inconvenient geographical location (distance from the main city of Puerto del Rosario) and the constantly increasing volume of cargo and population growth, the question arose of building a new airport with greater capacity and a more advantageous location. So the airport was moved to the village of Los Estancos, just 5 km from the island’s capital.

But the air gateway did not remain here for long either. Due to the climatic features of this place (strong winds) and the rapid growth of air passengers, the airport was relocated again. This time it was located closer to the coast, near the village of El Matorral.

The official opening of the new airport took place on September 14, 1969. Since 1973, planes have been flying from Fuerteventura Airport not only to the islands of the Canary Archipelago and mainland Spain, but also to other European countries.

After the latest renovations carried out in 1992-1994, Fuerteventura Airport acquired its present appearance: a large modern terminal (capable of accommodating about 5 million passengers per year) with a spacious car park and a new access road.
