The writer purchased this house for 9,000 reals and lived there until his last day – August 26, 1635. In 1935, the building was recognized as a Historical Heritage site and converted into a museum (Casa Museo Lope de Vega), representing a model of a Madrid family residence from the 16th century, remodeled in the 17th century. Today, the building is maintained by the Royal Academy. It was restored in 1965.
The rooms of the house museum – the writer’s study, a chapel in the middle of the house, the bedrooms of the writer and his two daughters, a guest room and a kitchen – are all furnished with authentic furniture and household items from the 17th century, some of which belonged to the writer himself. Here you can see how the great writer lived and in what conditions he worked on the great comedies that the whole world still laughs at today.
In the inner courtyard, there is a small garden and vegetable patch, as well as a primitive well preserved from that time. On the facade, there is a coat of arms of Lope de Vega with the motto: «Parva Propia Magna / Magna Aliena Parva.»
